How We Estimate Dumpster Rental Costs
Transparency about base ranges, multipliers, and how often estimates are refreshed.
Last updated:
Every estimate on Dumpster Rental Cost starts with a national base price range for the chosen size, then applies transparent adjustments for project, rental length, weight, location, permit, and state cost tier. Below is exactly how those factors are applied.
Base size ranges (7-day rental, base state)
- 10-yard: $250 to $450
- 15-yard: $300 to $525
- 20-yard: $350 to $625
- 30-yard: $450 to $775
- 40-yard: $550 to $950
These ranges represent typical all-in 7-day rentals in a base-cost state with a standard included weight allowance.
Debris type adjustments
- Yard waste: -5% (lighter loads)
- Garage / house / moving / furniture / estate cleanouts: 0%
- Construction debris: +10%
- Roofing shingles: +15%
- Concrete or dirt: +25% (heavy disposal cost)
Rental length adjustments
- 1 to 3 days: -5%
- 7 days (standard): 0%
- 14 days: +10%
- 30 days: +25%
Load weight adjustments
- Light load: 0%
- Medium load: +10%
- Heavy load: +20%
Heavy loads correlate with weight overage exposure. The calculator also flags a heavy-debris warning when a smaller container would be safer than a larger one.
Permit assumptions
- No permit needed: $0 added
- Permit needed: $25 to $100 added (city-dependent)
- Not sure: $0 to $100 added as a planning buffer
Permits are usually required for street placement and are typically unnecessary for private driveways. Always confirm with your city.
Location type adjustments
- Urban: +5% (access, traffic, disposal facility distance)
- Suburban: 0%
- Rural: +10% (longer delivery distance)
State planning adjustments
States are grouped into four planning tiers. This is a planning factor, not an official state price.
- High cost (+12%): CA, NY, NJ, MA, WA, OR, CT, HI, AK, CO, MD, DC
- Medium-high cost (+6%): FL, TX, AZ, NV, IL, VA, PA, GA, NC, TN, MN, UT
- Base cost (0%): OH, MI, WI, IN, MO, SC, KY, AL, LA, OK, IA, KS
- Lower cost (-5%): MS, AR, WV, ND, SD, NE, NM, ID, MT, WY, VT, ME, NH, RI, DE
Any state not listed defaults to the base tier.
Why final quotes vary
Real prices vary even within the same state and ZIP code. Common reasons a final quote lands above or below our planning range:
- Local landfill tipping fees and disposal facility distance
- Delivery distance from the hauler's yard
- Driveway access, low branches, or tight cul-de-sacs
- Permits, HOA rules, and right-of-way requirements
- Demand seasonality and weekend pickups
- Provider pricing model (flat-rate vs variable, included tonnage)
- Taxes, environmental surcharges, and fuel adjustments
- Prohibited item fees (mattresses, tires, electronics, paint)
Sources we use for pricing context
- Public dumpster rental pricing pages from national and regional providers
- Public home service cost references such as HomeAdvisor, Angi, Budget Dumpster, and Dumpsters.com
- Public city permit pages where available
- Public disposal and landfill fee references where available
We do not copy one source into the calculator. We compare public ranges, remove extreme outliers where appropriate, and use conservative planning ranges so users can estimate a likely budget before calling local providers.
A calculator result is not a final quote. Local providers may price differently based on city, ZIP code, delivery distance, landfill fees, included weight, debris type, rental length, permits, taxes, fuel charges, and seasonal demand.
Update cadence
Base ranges and multipliers are reviewed quarterly. The "Last updated" date on each page reflects the most recent refresh.
